The Zambian cabinet has been holding an emergency meeting

The Zambian cabinet has been holding an emergency meeting to discuss who will succeed President Michael Sata, who died in London late on Tuesday. Mr Sata, was receiving hospital treatment for an undisclosed illness.

A BBC correspondent says there are believed to be squabbles within the governing party about who should replace Mr Sata as head of state. Under the constitution, Vice President Guy Scott cannot do so because his parents were born outside Zambia.

The defence minister, Edgar Lungu, has been acting president since Mr Sata left for London. A presidential election must be held within 90 days.
